Many foreigners have asked me how we made the Danish style. And I’ve answered that it…was rather a continuous process of purification, and for me of simplification, to cut down to the simplest possible elements of four legs, a seat and combined top rail and arm rest.
Hans Wegner
He worked as a freelance architect and taught furniture design at the Kunstgewerbeschule from 1946 to 1953. From 1940 he focused his work primarily on the design of furniture. In 1940 he designed chairs and tables for Arne Jacobsen’s Aarhus City Hall. Wegner also designed cutlery, wallpaper and lamps.
Hans J. Wegner is best known for his chairs. He designed over 500 different models, most of which were made entirely of wood. Many are still made in Denmark, including by the companies Carl Hansen & Søn, Fritz Hansen and PP Møbler.
