Chanel Nº5 In contrast to the perfumes popular in the fin de siècle era, Chanel No. 5 does not consist of the scent of a single flower, but is a complex composition of originally exactly 31 perfume raw materials (bases not itemised), even though Chanel itself and the literature repeatedly report over 80 or even 250 ingredients.

Chanel Nº 5 is a women’s perfume that the French fashion designer Coco Chanel launched in Paris in 1921, the original Nº5 Parfum is an abstract blend of floral notes, including hints of May rose and jasmine from Grasse.

In 1921, French couturier Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel introduced CHANEL Nº5 as her first perfume.
The fragrance’s formula was crafted by French-Russian chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux.

Chanel had a deep affinity for the number five. It held special meaning for her.
During her childhood at a convent orphanage, the paths she walked were laid out in circular patterns, repeating the number five.
The lush surrounding hillsides with Cistus (rock roses) also influenced her connection to the number.
When presented with sample scents numbered 1 to 5 and 20 to 24, she chose the fifth vial, she declared:

I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year, and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already—it will bring good luck.

Chanel envisioned a bottle that would be an antidote to the over-elaborate crystal fragrance bottles of the time.
She wanted “pure transparency” and an “invisible bottle.”
The design is believed to be inspired by the rectangular beveled lines of Charvet toiletry bottles, which her lover, Arthur “Boy” Capel, favored.

N°5 Parfum was groundbreaking due to perfumer Ernest Beaux’s innovative use of aldehydes.
Aldehydes added layers of complexity, making N°5 shockingly modern in an era of single-note scents.

Coco Chanel herself became the face of the fragrance, appearing in advertisements.
Her vision and the mystique surrounding the number five contributed to the enduring allure of CHANEL Nº5.
