The film Public Enemy accurately depicts beer as the primary focus of bootlegging in Chicago. This is in contrast to New York, where hard liquor was predominate.

The reason is geography: For equivalent alcohol content, beer is far bulkier than hard liquor, and distributing the requisite quantities of beer was not practical in the confined spaces of Manhattan.
