Dieter Rams is an industrial designer closely associated with the consumer products company Braun and the Functionalist school of industrial design. His unobtrusive approach and belief in “less but better” design generated a timeless quality.

It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years — even in today’s throwaway society.

Power output: 12 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo) Frequency response: 20Hz to 30kHz Total harmonic distortion: 0.7% Damping factor: 30 Input sensitivity: 10mV (mic), 3mV (MM), 200mV (line) Signal to noise ratio: 50dB (mic), 50dB (MM), 60dB (line) Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 15Ω Valve complement: 6 x ECC 83, 4 x EL 84 Dimensions: 400 x 100 x 320mm Weight: 11kg

Rams’ designs also stretched beyond the world of consumer electronics. In 1957 he designed the revered 606 universal shelving system for Vitsœ, which has been in continuous production ever since. Easy to assemble, its modular system allowed for endless variations and could be adapted to fit anywhere. In 1962, Rams even developed a new hi-fi series, the Audio 1, to fit snugly into the 606 system; a seamless continuation of his coherent ‘family’ of Braun products.

Under Rams guidance, the classic Braun shavers appeared on the market. The Sixtant was a thick and solid little piece of machinery whose operating sound would make you believe that inside, a small locomotive was powering the thing.

Dieter Rams was recruited to Braun as an architect and an interior designer. In 1961, he became the chief design officer at Braun, a position he retained until 1995. Dieter Rams was strongly influenced by the presence of his grandfather, a carpenter.
