Martin Margiela left the fashion world in 2008.

In the 20 years of his work he has remained anonymous as a designer, has never shown his face and has not given any interviews. ‘I don’t like the idea of fame,’ he says in the documentary. ‘It balances me out being like everyone else.’ Martin Margiela speaks for the first time, you can hear his voice, his English with a distinct Belgian accent.

You can’t see his face. Instead, his hands, which feel their way through the designer’s well-stocked archive and dress old Barbie dolls – in shoes with cut-off toes based on the Courrèges model that he saw on TV as a small boy, or in a gray flannel blazer, the first article of clothing he ever made himself, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent.
