Last evening’s project was to upgrade to 2.5 on a subdomain of one of my web sites. So I go through the tired and true procedure:
* Backup the site.
* Backup the db.
* Deactivate all plugins
* Delete all WP files, except wp-content
* Upload the new files
* Run the upgrade script

How to install:

• 1. Unpack this archive on your HD.
• 2. Open it and look for the style.css and social.php.
• 3. Adjust the css your current theme

  e.g. background colors, font colors and so on in styles.css.

• 4. Adjust the image call som it compliments your current theme
  e.g. path to your image folder : url ( images/digg.gif ) or url ( img/digg.gif ) and so on to match your current theme.
• 5. Upload the social template to your current themes folder, the images to the themes image folder.
• 6. Open your home.php, index.php and single.php, where you want to place the php call.
  Best place to integrate would be after the tags call under each wp post call.

Can a WordPress theme be accessible on a cell phone, PDA or iPhone? Well, yes, the WP Journal with a fluid layout without using any plugins, additional stylesheets or hacks.

How to test it: Get the latest version of Opera, open Shop, select from the view tab “small screen”, voila, there you have it.

Everything renders very fine, even the flash gallery is accessible, all done via a fluid layout.
Test it on a Sony or Nokia.
All done with NO additional stylesheet, just a fluid layout and some CSS tweaks.

In particular DO NOT download the themes from easyblogthemes.
Reason: easyblogthemes added php codes with unvisible ads in ALL themes.

It’s winter time now, a little adjustment on the milo theme:
added some white background to the header and footer, freshed up the logo, the projects page,
the flash gallery and added a new flash gallery to the post template.

Still to do are some minor tweaks for IE 6+7, the beloved crappy browsers.

Just finished the retouching works on Reinar’s site: F1 Racing using WordPress and some custom extensions (e.g. counter, flv player, dropdown navi ) to suit a perfect CMS system.

While here, check this site Synide net, using one of my themes (Soho) fully converted as an online magazine. And last weekend the WordPress themes reached 250,000 downloads…

Another real good and new magazine layout is the japanese TagHeuer site.
Also Jung von Matt, a fairly wellknown german PR/advertising agency uses WordPress now as a CMS system for their blog and main site.

It’s a pretty interesting tutorial about converting Django to a full CMS system much alike WordPress, unfortunately it looks like the tutorial is not finished yet, but with the starting points and some knowledge about Django should be farely easy to fllow the steps.

Built in is a nifty drop down menu: shows different pages and posts as well as archives or news items. The menu items are accessible on hover in a second bar. I’ve added a tabbed column with its own menu and content on the homepage. The post dates are especially formatted to draw more attention to each post, as well as stylish newspaper style icons. Currently the demo page shows a movie via a built in flv player (not included), but it’s easy to set up a fflash gallery or similar.

Last night I’ve had to code some mapping and tweaking of a database, Over worked and exhausted, couldn’t sleep, so I finished the coding for the mockup, here is the first psd, I’ve created another mockup for the single page view, have still to tweak some bugs and validate it, but I’m very pleased with the finish, as I could establish almost everything, what I wanted like the projects slider in the footer as well as a good functions php, therefore less plugins to work with:

have no clue why some highly acclaimed WordPress developers are still insisting on fixed layouts…

This week those crappy sponsored themes were “dismissed” from Weblog tools and Matt (head off WordPress) applaud it and talked about that “sponsored themes SHOULD be removed from themes.wordpress.net“.

Now what this phrase should means? Immediately? I doubt that over four hundred (if not more) “sponsor” themes could be removed before WordCamp. So what’s the action now?
While I appreciate the solution, I won’t applaud for now, as nothing changed on the theme viewer, still sponsor themes are uploaded.

Just check this thread at Digital Point, where theme sponsoring is still a go.

Wonder if all the action is worth the $100 US Dollars for developing a free theme?<

Recently I’ve installed the Comment timeout plugin by James McKay, alongside with the previously installed Akismet and Bad Behaviour almost every spam comment is stopped on this site. Before the installing of Comment Timeout, around 300 spam a day arrived, now it tends to zero.

So if you have a problem with spam, install those three plugins, configure it and say F**** off to spam.

Inspiration:

But the main inspiring came from the movie L.A. Confidental, where a club is named Fleur de lys (whose motto is “Anything you want”):

What might the WordPress community be, if it existed? Everyone who is ever used WordPress? Everyone who is using it now? Everyone who is contributed a plugin, or a theme, or core code, or who is posted on the support forums or edited the Codex?

this post led me to Kyle’s rant about the WordPress community:

I am not going to lie: a lot of my disheartening comes from fellow developers. It all started with a bit of an unexpected benefit of developing a template. From that point, we have progressed to the point of people selling linkbacks in Templates. They call it sponsored, but what they really mean is cheap trick.

Ahh, sponsored themes? Does anyone remember this thread followed by this neat conversion?
Is there such thing as a stable WP community? Can’t see much theme or plugin developers at the support forum, and with the opening of the themeviewer to everybody, there is now this funny (?) conversion between the moderator and theme “developers”. See comments no from 283 to 290 and have fun.

Just to prove that I can design a quiet layout too, maintained with a flash header showing some of my work, third sidebar shows different info at each page.

Interesting tech to use: hard coded within the template.

this time with a fluid three column outfit: adjusts itself on browsersize.

Two sidebars with WP action like calendar, recent comments and a slick flash clock with another calendar built in, the main column on frontapge is showing the latest posts with the recent posts underneath.

Additionally the header image rotator by automatic is built in too, prepared eight views of different cities like New York, Mumbai or Buenos Aires. implemented is also a del.icio.us script and support for your flickr API.

Another attempt on a new layout for the frontpage of a WordPress site: Row, this time in my favourite colours: #900 and #000, sidebars are fixed, but the main column is fluid width, it adjusts itself on browser size.

Additionally implemented a sideblog and multiple columns in the footer, where various content like del.icio. us links or can be placed. Built in recent comments and support for flickr API. At the moment the themeviewer is acting weird with timeouts and updates not working, so try it several times to access it.

Row WP Theme:

On the other hand we’re doing a complete new theme without any base, just start from the scratch, as of now the theme viewer is full of bad coded, “cheap” and sold WP Themes. Awful.

Modern & standard conform style with html5 goodness

Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The best-known type of silk is obtained from cocoons made by the larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture).
The shimmering appearance for which silk is prized comes from the fibres’ triangular prism-like structure which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles. I love silk, especially blue silk, created a WordPress theme drenched in blue gradients: the Silkstream theme, looks like I have a preference for the letter S withing the last days.

Of course something like
after_title' => './h2..ul class="arrow".

and more is a nice deal, but the full control about the sidebar and its layout is lost, as any widget developer styles his work different: there should be some guidelines for the layout like use of h2 tags and so on.

But on the other hand where is the benefit except of making WP life easier? With the use of widgets the sidebar layout is totally different than the original theme: get back in control of your site, as with widgets enabled the widgets control the look and feel of your site.

Ok, not so new, but some adjustments like the drop down slide show with gallery, delicio and recent post is a nice feature…well, I think so.
Underneath are another three columns with different posts by categories. easy go.
