Typography Tips

* Determine the image you want to project with your publication and choose fonts with personalities that will fit that image.
* Limit the number of typefaces you use in a publication. Many experts say to use a limit of two typefaces, but occasionally this will vary. Too many typefaces can create an unprofessional, jumbled image.
* Look at various publications for ideas about which typefaces work well together and the images they project.

* When using two typefaces, make sure they are very different. One typeface will probably be used for display type, such as headings, and the other for text. Strive for definite contrast between the two.
* When choosing only one typeface family, choose one with a lot of variations, so you will have some flexibility with your text design. The typeface Helvetica has many variations such as Helvetica Bold, Light, Regular, Condensed or Narrow, Outline, and Black.
* If you are unsure about which typeface to select, choose a common and reliable one such as Garamond, Palatino, Helvetica, Goudy, or Times Roman.
* When using a display type that has very strong characters (type that is bigger and bolder than regular type), use a typeface for text that looks more neutral. Very elaborate typefaces can be hard to read. Limit their use to only a few words and make sure the words are legible.
* All caps are harder to read than upper and lower case letters. Try to limit the use of all caps to two or three words. Some typefaces, such as Old English, are not designed to be used for all caps.
* Use bold and italic type for just a few words.
* Avoid setting large blocks of text in bold or italic type. Both styles are generally more difficult to read than regular type. A block of bold type tends to darken a page.

* Typeface weight will have a large impact on the color or darkness of your page. Thin lines will create a light and airy appearance, while thick lines will create a dark and heavy appearance. Weight can be very important to the image of a publication.
* Different typefaces take up different amounts of space. Some fonts are larger and take up more space per letter. This can greatly affect the length of a publication.
* The reader’s eye is attracted by white space. It gives the eye a rest and calls attention to what it surrounds.
* Break multi-line headings by phrase (where a spoken pause would occur). Place more white space above heading than below. This signals the reader that the heading goes with the text below it.
* Increase the spacing between lines or leading to create a lighter-looking page.

My, respective my client projects went very well during the last year, so I had not that much time to focus on artwork, but maybe I may have more time for it in the future.

Tought of sharing my login pages for this site as well as for the showcase, arty and quite overboarding, but it reflects my style completely.

Even some other login pages to discover, I know of a flickr pool for login pages, quite a few nice examples, but couldn’t find the real gruop.

Even some new videos like the McQueen / Dunaway chess scene from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), one of my alltime favourites besides the BladeRunner movie.

More of an overhaul than a complete redesign of my website, still in love with the previous version, but it was time to make things easier to navigate, to use new fonts and a new style for the frontpage.

New fonts as the Steiner and similar fonts are now dead, used by too many, therefore a dead end.
Frontpage slide is now powered by jQuery instead of the serp’s unreadable swf file.
It’s heaver on load but allows more options and tweaks.

Redone the about page, added more testimonials for better visibility.
Still some stuff to do, like adding new footer areas (music or social like friendfeed ?), but that has time.

Maybe I should convert milo317 too to plain white…. be sure to view the E Zine in full screen mode to get the whole experience.

Apparently I’ve chosen the right city to live and work in Germany: Munich.
According to the key indicators for technology, talent and tolerance by the Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, Munich made the first place in all the bespoken areas.
The domain level for *.de in Munich with 282.4 domains per inhabitants higher than in any other german city, also the city Munich leads the german University ranking by 27 points, while the rent prices (9.41 Euro per squaremeter) are the highest among all other german cities.

The coffee prices in Munich are somewhat ridicolouos: 7 Euro for a takeaway(!) (insert brand) coffee, not mentioning that this takeaway coffees are the worst crap money can buy.

Or better: visit Lake Garda, have a break in the city Limone at a Cafe after surfing the whole day and enjoy the REAL italian coffee instead of this sleezy takeaway coffee.

Blood, sweat and tears… working with CS3 isn’t the easiest thing, especially combining flash and photoshop together gave me some headaches. Nevertheless it’s alive and kicking.

Here you will find all my previous posts (around 685 posts contained with 834 comments) imported via the native WordPress tool,
the whole content within all permalinks are working and all of my HUNDRED free WordPress themes.

Please update your bookmarks, feed subscription and mail adresses.

Moving was farly easy: exported all content, from the set up of a new server (now proudly hosted by MediaTemple), one main domain : 3oneseven to the shop and the test page for WordPress themes.
However the XML file was too heavy (around 4mb), so I had to cut it in two pieces to get the import working.
Managed to get all pages, posts as well as the categories in the right place imported.

Updating the permalinks

structure was not that tricky, see this example:
old permalink: milo.peety-passion.com/2007/11/29/newspaper-style
new permalink: 3oneseven.com/29/newspaper-style

Just replaced the old address (milo.peety-passion.com/2007/11/29/…)
with this string 3oneseven.com/29/.. through the permalink options.

Of course I still have to update older posts, which are showing dead links to the previous page, but I am half way through.

Improvements

Some areas were improved, like the all new gallery page now with a hand coded flash application.
Permalinks are now much nicer that before, from ../2007/11/29/… to ../29/… which should achieve better SEO compability.
Categories have a nicer prefix with the term topics.
Site speed should be ok now with the install of the latest wp cache, but the supercache looks interesting, might try that.
The RSS Feed shows now a RSS to PDF link, means you can download posts to your hard drive as a PDF.

Hosting

New server provided by MediaTemple with plenty of space and huge bandwidth, this way I am thinking of setting up hosting of other sites, if this sounds interesting, please drop me a line,
however it won’t be mass hosting, just a few handpicked sites. =)
