Now this is one of the finest and cleanest artworks I’ve seen in the past: PSE Web with wonderful illustrations from Range Murata based in Osaka, Japan.

Italian artist and graphic designer Gianluca Matta created a calendar for the Suicide girls and graphics for the agency Gogo dolls.

No fear, nothing to hide, Matta’s art speaks its own language, although some people might be offended.

For the last volume, Modernism Rediscovered, Shulman opened his vast archive to cull over 500 photos, many of them unpublished, of houses, office buildings, and other structures by talented but lesser-known and forgotten architects.

In the late eighties Doig nailed his “psychedelic symbolism” into paintings, inspired by a dream sequence of the movie Friday the 13th(!).

From there on Doig painted his first “canoe” picture. Might be interesting to read the book Peter Doig by Searle, Grenier and Scott or see some of his work at the Saatchi gallery.

In the nineties Marco Petrus came up with colourful panorama paintings of Milan, in between closely drenched office buildings the dome of a church emerged. Petrus belongs to a group of painters and sculptors, who founded four years ago the Italian Factory.

The Torre Velasca inspired the artist in particular, since 2001 around thirty paints are showing the fortress reminding office tower built by the architects BBPR and thereby transformed it into pop versions, whose colour pallet remind of Mel Ramos.

Sometimes it’s conflictive, sometimes contemplative, my illustrations attempts to reflect the interactions of people: illustrating what makes us violent or passive, still or in motion, beautiful or ugly.

Frank van der Salms work is a part of collections with Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas New York, the Seattle Public Library, Atelier HSL/SKOR, the Amsterdam HSL-Zuid Photography Project , Rijksgebouwendienst, De Leidschen Poort, the Province of Zuid-Holland, and the Institut Nerlandais in Paris.

Unfortunately I’ve missed their exhibition at the 46th Milan International Furniture, but their factory is near Milano, so next time in Italy, a visit is planned.

The exhibiton includes the Lobster telephone (picture) by Dali among works from Meret Oppenheim, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray.

The exhibition explores how Surrealism evolved from radical avant-garde beginnings to become one of the most influential movements of the century and a common visual language of modernity. A definite must for the summer.

My illustrations are colourful, exaggerated and a bit crazy. They are composed of elements which have no connections at first sight, but bang together on the paper. It’s up to the spectator to build the story told by the illustration.

The journey is partly about Caneton showing that he is still competent in this kind of work, but more interestingly also about him coming to terms not just with his own history but with the realisation that the past is past and that this is no longer what he does. It makes the novel more than a run of the mill thriller, as Lyall examines a side of “the hero” not so commonly part of the genre – what happens when the time for heroism is past. Cane is a contrast to the other man accompanying the party across France: an alcoholic bodyguard unable to cope psychologically with the work that he is supremely gifted in – another interesting character.

Midnight plus one is an excellent book by Gavin Lyall.

Despite her life of suffering and pain, Frida Kahlo was a vibrant, loose extroverted character whose everyday speech was filled with profanities. She had been a tomboy in her youth and carried her fervor throughout her life. She was a heavy smoker, drank liquor (especially tequila) in excess, was openly bisexual, sang off-color songs, and told equally ribald jokes to the guests of the wild parties that she hosted.
