Anton Corbijn is an accomplished and very popular still photographer. He has photographed bands such as Kim Wilde, R.E.M. and filmed videos for bands like Nirvana ('Heart Shaped Box'), Metallica ('Hero of the Day') and Depeche Mode (with whom he collaborates since 1986).
Impressed by Joy Division's music, he moved to England to work as a regular photographer for the New Musical Express (1979).
1978's For The Sake Of Love saw Hayes record a sequel to 'Theme from Shaft' ('Shaft II'), but was most famous for the single 'Zeke The Freak', a song that would have a shelf life of decades and be a major part of the House movement in the UK. The same year, Fantasy Records, which had bought out Stax Records, released an album of Hayes's non-album singles and archived recordings as a 'new' album, Hotbed, in 1978.
Cobain's appreciation of early alternative rock bands also extended to Sonic Youth and R.E.M., both of which the members of Nirvana befriended and looked up to for advice. It was under recommendation from Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon that Nirvana signed to DGC in 1990, and both bands did a two-week tour of Europe in the summer of 1991, as documented in the 1992 documentary, 1991: The Year Punk Broke.
In 1993, Cobain said of R.E.M.: "If I could write just a couple of songs as good as what they've written... I don't know how that band does what they do. God, they're the greatest. They've dealt with their success like saints, and they keep delivering great music".
