This morning received eighteen spam comments, thanks to Akismet all of this crap shit is going straight to the garbage. The total number of blogs out there passed 50 million a month ago. 175,000 new blogs are created every day. There about 5.3 million blog postings per day, seventy percent of which are actually ’spam’ from a splog. In other words, seventy percent of all blog postings are spam (State of The Blogosphere, 2006).
Spam in blogs (also called simply blog spam or comment spam) is a form of spamdexing. It is done by automatically posting random comments, promoting commercial services, to blogs, wikis, guestbooks, or other publicly-accessible online discussion boards. Any web application that accepts and displays hyperlinks submitted by visitors may be a target.
Adding links that point to the spammer’s web site artificially increases the site’s search engine ranking. An increased ranking often results in the spammer’s commercial site being listed ahead of other sites for certain searches, increasing the number of potential visitors and paying customers.

on Oct2 06Be happy it’s so few. I’d literally get thousands a day if it weren’t for Bad Behavior blocking most (but not all of course) of the bots before they can get to my site. Actually, I have on occasion gotten over a thousand a day on a couple occasions when they managed to get past Bad Behavior in droves.
