Jeff Atwood from Coding Horror wrote an excellent article about useless blog features, as they are:
- - Useless calendar widget
- - Useless amount of social services
- - Unusable GIANT blogroll
- - Excessive advertisements
- - Top (n) Lists
I picked those five points while Atwood has thirteen of them, in particular the calendar widget is really a waste of space, visitors (according to my stats) and I’ve never used that thingy, that’s why it’s hidden here in the top menu. Those nifty little social bookmarking services are ok if using three of them, like delicio, digg or technorati (really?), but I’ve seen some sites, where those icons were bigger than the actual content. The last two points are brainless, while I understand the moneymaking point, Google stated in their webmaster blog, that newly established sites with a wast amount of ads will be punished due to their lack of content vice versa ads.
