Sony CEO “Obssessed” with Xbox 360, Praises Bill Gates
During these heated console battles, it’s not often that a competitor has kind words for the “enemy.” In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, however, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer (right) revealed his admiration for Xbox and Bill Gates.
During The Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference, technology guru Walter Mossberg sat down with Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer to talk all things Sony as well as Sony’s competition from Microsoft, Apple, Samsung and others. While the piece naturally does not focus squarely on video games, Stringer does provide a few interesting, if not comical, tidbits.
When asked about the success of the Sony Pictures movie The Da Vinci Code, Stringer emphasized the worldwide box office sales, and then mistakenly said, “It also beat Xbox 3 in Europe in its second weekend…”
Mossberg replied, “You mean X-Men” and the two got a good laugh out of the slip, but it also provided Mossberg with the perfect opportunity to grill Stringer on PS3’s main competitor, the Xbox 360. Stringer exclaimed, “There’s an obsession!”
Surprisingly, Stringer also had some positive words for Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates. “God I walked into that, didn’t I…” said Stringer referring to his previous slip. “Look, the skill of Bill Gates is he’s so brilliant at his detail that when he slips in the salesmanship, most of us think: oh my God, he must be right. … He talked on the one hand, and I loved it, he talked about [Windows] Vista [being] delayed as if delay was normal, and then he started mocking me for delaying PS3 [PlayStation 3].”
Talking more specifically about the PS3, Stringer emphasized the console’s technology and array of functionality. He also justified the $499 / $599 price by repeating what other Sony execs have said recently: that the PS3 is not just about playing video games.
“… look it’s got more bells and whistles than a 747. … That Cell processor is extraordinarily powerful and you have nine hours of high definition on the Blu-ray disks alone…The reason it’s expensive [is that] instead of concentrating on just the games player, which would have been done in the past, PlayStation 3 is designed to go somewhere else, where it’s the center of the living room … It’s part of the new digital strategy to try and create a new software mentality in Tokyo because it’s quite clear that we’ve been an analog company migrating to digital with some difficulty.”
