Apart from making pretty things prettier(?), and ugly things at least more acceptable, it’s all about problem solving. To follow directions but still manage to keep your work fresh, unique and personal. It’s also very important to be able to stay TRUE to your style, while at the same time constantly challenging yourself and never get fat and lazy and afraid of trying new things.
